TWO NEW VESSELS built to take advantage of the redesigned Panama Canal are now in full service. Built at the Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries in Mokpo, South Korea, Thermopylae and Thalatta can transport up to 8 000 equivalent car units, around 1 500 more than the previous car carriers. Two further Post-Panamax vessels are on order and due to be delivered in 2016.

With a new draft, the vessels can call at ports with shallower depths, increasing their geographical scope of service. Each vessel is fitted with a new scrubber, an exhaust-gas cleaning system that reduces sulphur emissions to below 0.1% in compliance with ECA regulations and removing 70% of particulate matter, significantly reducing NOx emissions.
